Health and Safety policy

Man and Van North Sheen Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van North Sheen is committed to maintaining high standards of health and safety for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public. This policy sets out the principles and arrangements we follow to manage health and safety risks associated with our man and van and removal services.

Policy Statement

Our objective is to provide removal and transport services in a way that prevents injury, ill health and damage to property. We will identify and control foreseeable risks arising from lifting, carrying, loading, driving and working in and around customer premises, highways and loading areas. We will comply with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice.

Scope of the Policy

This policy applies to all activities carried out by Man and Van North Sheen, including domestic and commercial moves, collection and delivery of items, packing, loading and unloading vehicles, and short-term storage operations. It covers all employees, contracted workers and any other persons working on our behalf.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Man and Van North Sheen is responsible for implementing and maintaining effective health and safety arrangements. This includes:

Ensuring that suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out for removal and transport activities and that appropriate control measures are implemented and reviewed regularly.

Providing safe vehicles, equipment and tools that are maintained in good working order and suitable for the tasks undertaken.

Ensuring that all staff receive appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to carry out their work safely, including manual handling, vehicle safety, use of lifting equipment and working in customers premises.

Promoting a positive safety culture where concerns can be raised openly and improvements are actively sought and implemented.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and contractors working for Man and Van North Sheen share responsibility for health and safety. They are required to:

Take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions while at work.

Follow all safety procedures, instructions and training provided, especially regarding lifting techniques, use of equipment, personal protective equipment and safe driving.

Report accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, faulty equipment and any health and safety concerns to management without delay.

Cooperate fully with any investigation, training or improvement initiatives related to health and safety.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

We conduct risk assessments for our core man and van activities and update them when there are changes in work practices, equipment or locations. Typical risks include manual handling injuries, slips and trips, falls from vehicles, traffic hazards, property damage and environmental conditions such as poor lighting or adverse weather.

Based on these assessments, we establish safe systems of work, which include:

Planning each move in advance, including access routes, parking, loading points and any specific risks at the property or premises.

Using appropriate lifting and moving aids where available and ensuring that loads are within safe weight limits for individual workers.

Ensuring vehicles are loaded securely to prevent shifting loads and that access to doors, exits and emergency equipment is not obstructed.

Working carefully in communal areas, stairwells, pavements and driveways to minimise risks to the public and prevent damage to property.

Manual Handling

Safe manual handling is central to our removal services. We will:

Provide training on correct lifting and carrying techniques and on recognising when a load is too heavy or awkward to be handled safely.

Encourage team lifting and the use of equipment such as trolleys and straps where sensible and practical.

Discourage lone lifting of heavy or bulky items and promote pre-planning of lifts, including clear communication between team members.

Vehicles and Driving Safety

Our vehicles are essential to our operations and must be used safely on every journey. We will:

Ensure that all vehicles are regularly inspected, serviced and maintained in line with legal and manufacturer requirements.

Require drivers to hold appropriate, valid licences and to be medically fit to drive.

Promote safe driving practices, including adherence to speed limits, safe parking and loading, and avoidance of mobile phone use while driving.

Plan routes where possible to reduce unnecessary risks, congestion and difficult manoeuvring.

Personal Protective Equipment

We will provide suitable personal protective equipment where risk assessments show it is necessary. This may include safety footwear, gloves and high-visibility clothing. Staff are expected to use and look after any equipment issued to them and to report loss or damage promptly.

Accidents, Incidents and First Aid

All work-related accidents, injuries, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported and recorded. We will investigate incidents appropriately to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Staff will be informed of the arrangements for first aid and emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of injury, fire, collision or other emergencies while working at customer locations or on the road.

Training, Consultation and Communication

Man and Van North Sheen will provide initial and refresher health and safety training relevant to roles and tasks. We will consult with employees on health and safety matters and encourage suggestions for improving safety performance.

Important health and safety information, including changes to procedures or identified risks, will be communicated clearly and promptly.

Monitoring and Review

This policy and its implementation will be monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals, or sooner if there are significant changes in our operations, legislation or identified risks. Where improvements are identified, they will be implemented as part of our commitment to continuous improvement in health and safety management.

This Health and Safety Policy reflects the commitment of Man and Van North Sheen to conduct all removal and transport activities safely and responsibly for the benefit of our staff, customers and the wider community.
